STEIM support
It is possible to apply for STEIM support for the following research and development activities. Please take into account that STEIM plans ahead 2 to 3 months. The selection procedure can take 4 to 6 weeks. Carefully read the application procedure and the general project terms.
> Orientation workshops
Orientation workshops are held roughly once every 2 months, and last one week (Tuesday through Monday - not on Fri/Sat/Sun). 3 Or 4 persons are selected to study and explore the possible technical and artistic means available at STEIM for a potential future project. This will be achieved partly through lectures by the educational department of STEIM, partly through cooperation between the participants, and partly through (informal) contact with the STEIM staff regarding specific requirements and wishes of each participant. During this week, the participants will have 24/7 access to their own workspace (a non-soundproof atelier), and lodging will be provided in our simple self-catered guesthouse. Both workspace and lodging are offered free of charge. STEIM does not cover travel and food. A typical orientation workshop schedule (although this can change according to participant or STEIM staff requests):
Tuesday 11-13h Introduction STEIM, staff and tools
Tuesday 15-17h First steps into LiSa
Wednesday 11-13h Sensors, LiSa and junXion introduction
Thursday 11-13h More indepth junXion class
Thursday 14-16h Instrumental Electronics
Monday throughout the day - individual meetings about future plans For dates of upcoming Orientation Workshops please go to the workshops page. In your application you should specify what dates you prefer. Take into account that we usually schedule the workshops steered by preferences of applicants, so if there's no workshop scheduled yet in the period of your preference, this doesn't mean we cannot plan one.
> Residency projects
Applications that are more clearly developed (typically after an orientation) can be (a combination of) one of the following:
preparation of new (partly) electronic work;
development, refinement or modification of personal electronic instruments for music performance, based on STEIM technology (sensors, gamedevices, LiSa, JunXion);
programming of software (addons to the STEIM software, building of specific setups in LiSa).
> Internships
STEIM has possibilities for workplacements, although limited. The area of the workplacement can be hardware (development of sensor devices), software (development of STEIM software - especially C/C++ programmers) or artistic (assisting in STEIM projects - although there are very little opportunities for this). The budget for internships is very limited.
> Advise
It is always possible to get advise from STEIM on projects that are related to general STEIM activities.
> Hotel
STEIM runs a small artist hotel as part of its facilities. The rooms are usually occupied by project guests.
Application procedure Send an email to the STEIM office with the following information:
A short description of the project.
Include material or references to your work that you consider informative with respect to the application.
Links to audio-visual material online.
State clearly what kind of support you're requesting from STEIM (f.e. studio use only, hardware support, artistic advice, etc).
Format requirements:
If you send attachments, make sure they don't exceed 1.5MB.
Preferably use the PDF format for documents.
All documentation should be in English.
We do not accept non-electronic applications.
We prefer to listen to audio material online. Generally we do not solicit vast quantities of paper work. Judgement is preferably based on immediate encounters with you and your work. Your application will go through the selection procedure by the artistic and technical staff of STEIM. As the number of applications exceeds our project capacity, we have to make a selection, based on technical feasability, artistic content, and available STEIM staff, studio facilities and accomodation.
